Octopus Energy referral code: get £50 bill credit

Quick answer

How the Octopus Energy referral works

The current Octopus Energy referral offer gives an eligible new home customer £50 energy account credit when they start their quote through a personalised referral link and complete the switch. The referrer also receives £50. Octopus says credit is paid after the new customer is on supply and their first monthly Direct Debit succeeds, typically around four weeks.

What we will not tell you

We do not say the credit is guaranteed, immediate or paid within 30 days. Octopus ties payment to your first successful monthly Direct Debit, and the timing depends on how quickly your switch completes.

Treat the £50 as a one-off joining credit, not proof that a tariff is cheapest. Before switching, compare the live annual estimate, unit rates, standing charges, tariff type, exit fees, payment method and any smart-meter requirements.

The offer in full

What the referral offer actually is

It is a member-get-member scheme, not a discount code or a promotional tariff.

The Octopus Energy referral scheme rewards two people when a switch is completed correctly: the new customer who joins through a personalised link, and the existing customer (or, on this site, an approved affiliate route) whose link they used. Nothing about the underlying energy tariff changes because of the referral — you are quoted and billed on the same rates as anyone signing up directly.

The conditions Octopus attaches are narrow but firm. The referral must be attached before sign-up begins, the applicant must be a genuinely new home customer, the switch must complete rather than being cancelled, and the first monthly Direct Debit must be collected successfully. Miss any one of those and the credit is not awarded, regardless of how the tariff itself performs.

None of this is unusual for a refer-a-friend scheme, but it is worth stating plainly: the £50 is a joining incentive layered on top of a separate decision — whether an Octopus tariff is the right one for your home.

Decision framework

Is the switch worth it for you?

Weigh the one-off credit against what you will actually pay over a year, not just the headline reward.

1. Size the credit correctly

£50 is roughly one month's energy spend for a typical small household, and a much smaller share of a larger home's annual bill. Treat it as a modest bonus on top of the switch, not as the reason to switch.

2. Check the annual cost, not the credit

Compare the live quoted unit rates and standing charges against your current tariff for a full year of your actual usage. A tariff that costs more per year than your current deal is rarely worth it just because of a one-off credit.

3. Check exit fees and tariff fit

If leaving your current supplier triggers an exit fee, subtract that from any saving before deciding. Also check whether the Octopus tariff on offer — fixed, variable or smart — suits how you actually use energy, including any smart-meter requirement.

Simple rule of thumb

Only count the referral credit after you have separately confirmed the tariff is competitive for your usage and free of exit-fee traps. If those two checks fail, the credit does not rescue a bad switch.

Five steps

How to claim the £50 referral credit

Each step matters for tracking. Leaving the referral journey part-way through is the most common reason credit never appears.

  1. 1

    Start with the link

Open the personalised referral link so the referral is attached from the beginning of your quote.

  2. 2

    Enter real details

Use your actual postcode and, where possible, your annual kWh usage from a recent bill for a realistic estimate.

  3. 3

    Compare the live quote

Check unit rates, standing charges, tariff type, exit fees and any smart-meter requirement before committing.

  4. 4

    Complete the switch

Finish sign-up in the same journey if the tariff suits you. Do not restart the quote elsewhere.

  5. 5

    Wait for supply and payment

Credit follows supply start and your first successful monthly Direct Debit. Check balance history in the app.

Eligibility

Who normally qualifies — and who does not

Referral rules are set by Octopus Energy and can change. Use this as a guide, then confirm anything unusual with Octopus before you rely on the credit.

Likely eligible
  • A new home customer switching to Octopus for the first time
  • Sign-up started and completed through the personalised referral link
  • Supply successfully transferred to Octopus
  • First monthly Direct Debit taken successfully
May not qualify
  • Already supplied by Octopus, or a previous Octopus relationship covered by the terms
  • A property already on supply with Octopus
  • Sign-up completed through a comparison or cashback site
  • A switch that is cancelled before supply starts
  • A first Direct Debit that fails or is not collected
Check with Octopus

Prepayment meters, single-fuel accounts, business or charity supply and mid-switch house moves all sit outside the standard journey.

A short message to Octopus support before you sign up costs nothing and avoids relying on credit that was never going to be awarded.

Common conflict

Referral link or comparison site?

Comparison sites are useful for seeing what several suppliers would charge for your usage. But Octopus's guidance is that referral rewards follow a direct sign-up through the personalised link. If you complete the switch on a third-party journey, the referral is generally not attached and no credit is awarded.

The practical answer is to do both in the right order: compare first, decide whether the Octopus tariff genuinely suits your usage, then start the actual sign-up from the referral link.

Payment timeline

  1. Day 0You start a quote through the referral link.
  2. Day 0–1You complete sign-up directly with Octopus.
  3. Within about 5 working daysYour supply transfers under Ofgem switching rules.
  4. First monthYour first monthly Direct Debit is collected.
  5. Typically around 4 weeksCredit appears in your Octopus balance history.

Balanced view

Is Octopus Energy right for you?

A £50 one-off credit is worth far less than a tariff that fits your usage. Weigh both.

Often a good fit

  • Households happy to manage their account through an app and online billing
  • Homes with a smart meter, or willing to have one installed, who want access to smart tariffs
  • EV, heat pump or solar households that can shift usage to cheaper periods
  • People who want a single supplier for gas and electricity with straightforward monthly billing

Consider carefully

  • If your current fixed tariff carries exit fees that outweigh any saving
  • If you prefer paper billing, phone-first service or a non-Direct-Debit payment method
  • If a cheaper fixed deal elsewhere beats the live Octopus quote for your annual usage
  • If a smart or dynamic tariff would need equipment or habits you do not have

Treat the £50 as a one-off joining credit, not proof that a tariff is cheapest. Before switching, compare the live annual estimate, unit rates, standing charges, tariff type, exit fees, payment method and any smart-meter requirements.

If credit is missing

Work through this checklist first

Most missing-credit cases are timing, not error. Confirm each point before contacting Octopus, then give them the specific detail they need.

  • You started sign-up from the referral link, not a comparison site
  • Your switch completed and was not cancelled
  • Your account shows you are on supply with Octopus
  • Your first monthly Direct Debit has been collected successfully
  • You have checked balance history in the app or online account, not just the headline balance
  • Four weeks have passed since supply started
  • If all of the above are true, contact Octopus with your sign-up date and the code melon-crane-917

Set expectations

What the £50 credit is not

Not cash

It is account credit applied to your Octopus balance. It reduces what you owe for energy; it is not paid into a bank account, sent as a voucher, or available to withdraw separately.

Not a discount on unit rates

The credit does not change your per-unit price or standing charge. Your tariff is priced the same as it would be for anyone signing up directly, referral or not.

Not a guarantee

Payment depends on completing the journey correctly and Octopus's own checks. Terms can change, and edge cases such as prepayment meters or house moves are not covered by the standard route. Always confirm anything unusual with Octopus directly.

How this site is funded

Why we disclose the commercial relationship

Ad: Octopus50 is an independent site funded by the Octopus referral scheme — if you switch through our link and qualify, you receive £50 account credit and we may also receive £50.

We disclose this because a referral link is not neutral: if you switch through it and qualify, we may receive the same £50 reward Octopus pays any successful referrer. That is the entire commercial model behind Octopus50 — there is no other advertising, sponsorship or paid placement on this page. Publishing it plainly is why we also publish the conditions in full rather than only the headline figure.

How we check the offer

Our verification process, briefly

Reward amounts, the referral link destination, the payment trigger and the eligibility conditions shown on this page are checked directly against Octopus Energy's published referral FAQs, its refer-a-friend page and its terms and conditions — not against third-party summaries. The referral journey is opened and walked through manually so the destination and code shown here match what a reader will actually see.

We do not have access to Octopus's internal systems, so anything about individual account outcomes is described as guidance, with a link to Octopus support for confirmation. The offer was last checked on 29 August 2026; see the change log below for what, if anything, has moved since.

Frequently asked questions

The questions readers send us most often about the referral offer.

What is the current Octopus Energy referral code?

The referral identifier used on this site is melon-crane-917, which corresponds to the personalised link https://share.octopus.energy/melon-crane-917. Starting your quote through the link is the route Octopus describes for referral tracking, so you normally do not need to type the code anywhere.

How much is the Octopus referral credit worth?

An eligible new home customer receives £50 of energy account credit and the person who referred them also receives £50. Business referrals are a separate route currently worth £75 for the business and £75 for the referring customer.

Do I need to enter the code manually?

Usually not. If you start from the personalised referral link, the referral is attached to the quote you begin. If you are asked for a code during sign-up, use melon-crane-917 exactly as written, with hyphens and no spaces.

Can existing Octopus customers use a referral link?

No. The reward is aimed at new customers joining Octopus for their home energy supply. If you are already supplied by Octopus, or your property is already on supply with them, a new referral will normally not qualify. Check the official terms before relying on the credit.

What if I sign up through a comparison site?

Octopus guidance is that the referral must come through the personalised link, so joining via a third-party comparison or cashback site usually means no referral credit. You should still compare tariffs — just start the actual sign-up from the referral link if you want the credit.

When is the £50 credit added to my account?

Credit is applied once you are on supply and your first monthly Direct Debit has been successfully taken. Octopus says the overall process typically takes around four weeks, though it can take longer if the switch or first payment is delayed.

Is the £50 paid as cash?

No. It is energy account credit applied to your Octopus balance, which reduces what you pay for your energy. It is not a voucher, a bank transfer or immediate cash, and it cannot be withdrawn separately from your account.

Does a prepayment meter qualify?

Prepayment and legacy meter setups vary, and the referral scheme is built around a monthly Direct Debit payment trigger. If you pay by prepayment, check with Octopus directly before assuming credit will be awarded.

What happens if I am moving home?

If you are moving into a property and choosing Octopus as your new supplier, start the quote from the referral link. If you are an existing customer taking your account to a new address, that is a move rather than a new referral and will normally not qualify.

Do I need a smart meter?

A smart meter is not required to switch or to qualify for a standard referral, but certain smart or dynamic tariffs do require one. Check the requirements shown on your live quote before choosing a tariff.

Will my energy supply be interrupted when I switch?

No. Switching supplier is an administrative change: the same gas and electricity is delivered through the same pipes and cables. Ofgem's switching rules require suppliers to complete a standard switch within five working days once the request is confirmed.

Will the referral credit make Octopus my cheapest option?

Not necessarily. A one-off credit is a small fraction of a typical annual energy bill, so it should never be the deciding factor. Compare the live quoted unit rates, standing charges and tariff type against your current deal and any exit fees before switching, then treat the credit as a bonus rather than the reason to move.

I forgot to use the link — can the code be added afterwards?

Octopus says customers who signed up directly but forgot the referral link should contact it and give the referral code. It is a request, not a guarantee, and it is far less likely to be honoured if you joined through a third party.

What does the referrer get?

The referrer receives £50 of account credit when a referral qualifies. On this site that referrer may be us — that is how Octopus50 is funded, and it is why we publish the offer terms and payment conditions in full rather than overstating them.

Is Octopus50 part of Octopus Energy?

No. Octopus50 is an independent guide. Your quote, sign-up and account are all handled by Octopus Energy on its own website. We do not see or collect your quote, bank or meter details.
